» Indian termination policy «
Indian termination policy was policy set by the United States Congress in the 1950s and 1960s to assimilate the Native Americans (Indians) into mainstream American society. The intention was to terminate the US government's trusteeship of Indian reservations and make Indians assume all responsibilities of full citizenship. They became subject to state and federal taxes as well as laws, from which they were previously exempt. [1] The House concurrent resolution 108 announced the federal policy of termination and called for the immediate termination of Federal relationship with the Menominee and Klamath tribes. [2] Congress passed termination acts on a tribe by tribe basis, but most included the end of federal recognition and all the federal aid that came along with being federally recognized tribes. The government terminated its recognition of a total of 109 tribes and bands as sovereign dependent nations. Their population totaled over 11,000 Indians or 3% of the total Indian population. [3]
